Why Your Business Should Consider Hiring School Based Apprentices

Getting the right people to work for your business can be a hard slog. You want to know they’ll be able to do the job, will be a good fit and ultimately make a worthwhile contribution to your company.

But rather than hiring a qualified full time employee straight off the bat and hoping they’ll work out, consider taking on a school based apprentice instead.

Here at All Trades Queensland, we know the value and benefits businesses can get out of school based apprentices. That’s why we allow you to trial a school-based apprentice at no cost as part of our work experience program.

What is a School Based Apprenticeship?

A school based apprenticeship is an apprenticeship that’s undertaken by senior secondary students part-time while the apprentice or trainee is at school.

The purpose of this type of apprenticeship is to provide years 10, 11 or 12 students with hands-on work experience where they can work towards or complete a nationally recognised qualification while completing their senior school certificate.

The Benefits of School Based Apprentices

Train and mould them into an employee who really knows your business

A motivated and eager school based apprentice that’s taking their first step into the workforce will be easier to train and mould than a working veteran who’s set in their ways and less open to new ways of doing things.

They will be able to build knowledge of your business and processes and quickly become a valuable member of the team.

Future investment in your business

A school based apprentice or trainee is a smart choice. Think about it as investing in the future of your business with a low cost trainee who’s eager to learn and enter the workforce.

While they may not be ready to take on full responsibilities from the get-go, once they get the training and work experience needed, you’ll have a reliable and hardworking employee you can depend on.

No need to recruit or advertise

The process involved in hiring an employee is lengthy and costly. Whether you decide to advertise or go through a recruitment firm, once you’ve found a hire, there’s no guarantee they’ll be a good fit for your business.

With a school based apprentice, they grow with your business all while avoiding that recruitment phase.

Low cost and low risk

When you hire a school based apprentice or trainee through All Trades Queensland, you can expect to receive quality candidates without the costs and risks of a brand new hire.

No need to filter through all the resumes and sit through dozens of interviews to gauge if you’ve found a good hire or not. With a school based apprentice hand picked by us, you know what you’re getting.

Government incentives

As an employer hiring a school based apprentice, you may be eligible to receive incentives payments under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program.

This is, however, subject to eligibility criteria.

Trail a school based apprentice at no cost – With ATQ, you’ll be taking on a school based apprentice without the cost and the risk, so why not give it a go?

And if you decide it’s not right for you, there’s no obligation to stick with it.

Are School Based Apprentices Right for You?

This really depends on what your business needs, whether a school based apprentice will fill that need, and whether the cost and effort of the endeavour will be rewarding enough for you.

If you’re in a position where your business could use some more help, but you simply aren’t able to take on a full time hire just yet, consider taking on an apprentice. School based apprentices are particularly worthwhile if you’re happy to help train them in their role from the ground up.

They can then seamlessly move on into full employment down the track once you have the money, resources and the need to fill that position.

Making this decision also comes down to the industry you’re in. Some industries are more suited to school based apprenticeships and traineeships than others.

Here at All Trades Queensland we work with various industries including construction, automotive, engineering, hospitality, business admin and retail. Select your trade on our website to find out more.
