Picture this: it's a Tuesday morning at a small electrical contracting shop in Toowoomba. The boss, Dave, has been flat strung running three crews on a new aged-care fit-out. He needs a first-year apprentice, yesterday. A kid called Jayden rocks up in clean steel-caps and a polo with the tags still on. Twenty minutes later, Dave's offered him the gig — partly because Jayden's old man knows a bloke who knows a bloke. Six weeks in, Jayden's already had two no-shows, can't find a 10mm socket without GPS, and openly tells the leading hand he's "just doing this 'til a mate's dad sorts him a job at the mines."

Dave didn't lose a worker. He lost twelve months of training subsidies, the cost of PPE, the productivity drag on his leading hand, and a slot he could have given a kid who actually wanted to be a sparky. The real mistake wasn't hiring Jayden. The real mistake was the interview that wasn't really an interview.

Hiring an apprentice is one of the biggest commitments a small trades business makes. You're not just filling a seat — you're signing up for a four-year relationship with a young person who needs structure, mentoring, training off-the-job, and the patience of a saint on the days they pour brick cleaner into the wrong bucket. Get the interview right and you'll often pick up a tradie for life. Get it wrong and you'll be back on the phones in three months, wondering where your week went.

Why the interview matters more than the resume

Most apprentices walk in with a thin CV. A part-time gig at Macca's, maybe a Bunnings Saturday job, a Cert II Pre-Apprenticeship if you're lucky. The paperwork won't tell you much. What you're really hiring for at this level is attitude, curiosity, reliability, and a head that's screwed on enough to take direction without sulking.

That makes the interview the single most important data point you'll have. And the standard "so, tell me about yourself" doesn't cut it — you'll just get a recital of the resume you already read. You need questions that pull out behaviour, not rehearsed answers.

Set the scene before you ask anything

The best interviews don't feel like interviews. Sit the kid down in the smoko room, offer them a cuppa, and spend the first five minutes telling them honestly what your business does, what the job looks like day-to-day, what the worst part of the trade is, and what the best part is. A first-year who hears "you'll be sweeping floors and pulling cable through ceilings for six months before I let you near a switchboard" and still leans forward is a different beast to one who's mentally already in a ute with a Cert III.

Honesty up front filters out the daydreamers. It also flips the dynamic — instead of a nervous teenager performing, you get a real conversation. That's where the gold is.

The eight questions that actually tell you something

1. "Why this trade, and why now?"

This is your opener and it's deceptively simple. The answer you're listening for isn't "my uncle's a plumber" or "good money, ay." You want some flicker of genuine interest — a kid who's pulled apart a lawnmower, fixed a mate's bike, watched their dad rewire a shed. They don't need to be an industry expert. They need to have thought about it for longer than the drive over.

If they can't articulate a reason beyond "Mum said I had to get a job," that's not a dealbreaker, but it tells you their commitment will need building. If they say "I tried uni and hated sitting still," that's actually a green flag in most trades.

2. "Walk me through the last time you fixed or made something with your hands."

Far more useful than asking about experience in the abstract. You'll quickly see whether they're a tinkerer or a passenger. A kid who lights up describing how they rebuilt a mini-bike carb on YouTube tutorials is going to ride the learning curve of an apprenticeship a lot better than one who can't think of an example.

This is also a sneaky way to test communication. Can they explain a process in order? Can they admit the bit they got wrong? Both matter on a job site.

3. "Tell me about a day you really didn't want to show up — and what you did."

Apprenticeships are hard. The hours are early, the work is physical, TAFE block-release eats your weekends, and the pay packet in year one isn't going to fund a HiLux. Every single apprentice has weeks where they want to chuck it in.

You're not looking for a hero answer. You're looking for evidence that they've turned up to something — school, footy training, a casual job — when they didn't feel like it. Reliability is the single most predictive trait of apprentice success. If you remember one question from this list, make it this one.

4. "What's the longest you've stuck at one thing?"

Slight variation, but it draws out different information. Three years in the same junior cricket club. Two years working weekends at a café. A school project they kept refining. You want to see they can commit past the shiny-new phase. Four years is a long apprenticeship.

5. "How do you handle being told you've done something wrong?"

This is the one that exposes the soft underbelly. Some young blokes — and young women — have never been properly pulled up before. Site culture in trades isn't cruel, but it isn't gentle either. A leading hand who says "mate, that's wrong, do it again" isn't bullying — they're training.

If the candidate gets defensive describing past feedback, or blames a teacher or old boss for everything, you've got a problem. If they shrug and say "Yeah, fair enough, I'd rather know," you've got a future tradie.

6. "What does your week look like outside of work?"

You're not prying — you're checking the support structures. Does this kid have a routine? Do they play sport, train, see mates, help at home? Or are they up till 3am gaming and surviving on energy drinks? Both can work, but the latter is going to struggle with 6am starts in winter on a Roma gas project.

It's also where you sniff out red flags around transport. A first-year apprentice without reliable wheels in regional Queensland is a logistical headache you need to plan around, not discover in week two.

7. "Are you comfortable in tight spaces, heat, and heights?"

Industry-specific and non-negotiable. A roof-cavity-heavy sparky job, a confined-space plumbing gig, or a mine-site role with hot work permits all demand honest answers. Don't soft-pedal this one. Better to find out in the smoko room than at the top of a 12-metre ladder.

8. "What do you want to know about us?"

The classic closer, and the one most interviewers waste. If the kid says "nah, nothing," that's a data point — they didn't prep, or they're not curious, or they're too nervous to ask. Any of those is workable, but worth noting.

The good ones will ask about TAFE block dates, who their direct supervisor will be, whether you've put apprentices through before, and what happens after they qualify. Those questions tell you they're already thinking like an employee, not a job seeker.

Watch for the bits that aren't questions

Half of what you learn in an apprentice interview happens around the words. Did they shake your hand and look you in the eye, or did they slump in like they were doing you a favour? Did they bring a notepad? Did they ask where to park? Did they say g'day to your office manager on the way in?

None of these are dealbreakers individually. But stack three or four of them up and you've got a pretty clear read on whether this person will fit into your crew's culture. And culture, on a small trades team, is everything. One bad apprentice can sour a whole shop.

Where to find the candidates in the first place

You can run the best interview in Queensland and it won't matter if you're only fishing in your nephew's friend group. The talent pool for apprentices is wider than ever — school-leavers, mature-age career changers, ex-Defence, kids from regional towns hungry for an opportunity. Posting your role in the right place is half the battle.

After the interview: the unsexy bit

Two practical reminders that catch employers out every single year.

Reference-check, properly. Don't just ring the name on the form. Ring the school careers advisor, the footy coach, the café manager. Ask one question: "Would you have them back?" The pause before the answer tells you more than the answer.

Get the paperwork sorted before day one. Training contracts, white card, induction, PPE, super, TFN. It's worth a phone call before you swear the kid in.

The long game

Here's the truth most experienced tradies will tell you: the apprentice who turned out best wasn't usually the one with the flashiest resume on interview day. It was the quiet one who turned up ten minutes early every morning, asked questions, didn't whinge about the dirty jobs, and was still there at smoko on year four. That kind of person doesn't always sparkle in a 30-minute chat — which is exactly why your questions have to dig deeper than "what are your strengths and weaknesses."

Hire for hunger, reliability, and curiosity. Train for skill. And remember: every gun tradie you've ever worked with was once a clueless first-year who didn't know which end of a multimeter to hold.
