Maintaining Positivity and Perspective During COVID-19 Pandemic

I found these stress management techniques on a psychological services site, that may be useful for you during the COVID-19 Pandemic: 

  • Acknowledging that you are not alone, we are in this together, it is an extreme event which we are adjusting to and it will pass
  • Remembering to breathe/self regulate to manage stress/anxiety when feeling overwhelmed
  • In addition to having compassion for others, practise compassion for self
  • Focusing your energy on factors within your control (maintaining social distancing measures, keeping active, good hygiene) whilst acknowledging factors that are out of your control
  • Practising mindfulness/being present (there are a number of good mindfulness apps including: Smiling Mind; Headspace; and Calm)
  • Looking for the beauty in every day (e.g. sunrise, a blooming flower, clouds passing by)
  • Practising gratitude – at the end of each day taking stock of the things you are grateful for (e.g., family, friends, pets)
  • Touching base regularly and staying connected with family and friends whilst being creative during current social distancing measures (e.g., schedule in Zoom/Facetime catch ups for Netflix parties, trivia nights, lunch)

  • Wash your hands with soap and water regularly
  • Cover your cough and sneeze
  • Adhere to the social distancing rules
